You are here: home / about niya About Niya:Niya is a word we coined to symbolize the healing of the planet and the human race. Little did we know, Niya was the name of a city on the ancient Silk Road that existed 1500 years before we were even born. Once we started digging, we found the fascinating story of an ancient civilization juxtaposed at the crossroads of the world - where cultures collided and embraced and the peoples of the world came together.
The Meaning of the Word NIYA: As journalist Li Xiguang of the Washington Post wrote in ' NIYA: Pompeii on the Silk Road', "Niya was a land-locked yet cosmopolitan city-state where ancient Chinese peoples and cultures blended with those of India, Persia and Macedonian Greece. The urban center was a major stop on the Silk Road, the long, overland trading route that once linked the two great civilizations of Han China and the Roman Empire. Camel caravans carried Chinese and Japanese silks and furs westward and European gold, wool and silver eastward. With the goods, ideas and cultural traditions moved also." Niya Factoid:NIYA was once a major commercial center on the Southern Silk Road. It occupies a vast area beside the dried up bed of the Niya River - as much as 30 kilometers north to south and 5 kilometers east to west - and appears to have been abandoned around 350 CE when the river changed course or dried up and deprived it of its water supply. Ever Silent Spaces, The Forgotten Town of Niya , Jonathan Tucker. In this age we live in, Niya is the meeting space for minds that share the vision for a world with more promise for us, and generations to come. It validates how even just one person or one idea can make the world better, and together, we can create palpable change. The key is to address the root causes of suffering and conflict. |
